When performing a search, a group of filters is displayed on the left column, next to the results set. These filters can be used to refine the query and thus retrieve more relevant results.
These filters are built from the result set, using the most frequent terms to generate a ranking. When selecting a specific filter, the search is performed again considering this new element. This way, a simple click on any filter is enough to refine and re-execute a search.
Deleting a selected filter is also posible, by removing it from the criteria list displayed on top of the result list.
Currently, the generated filters are: Resource, Subject, Author, Year.
On the Advanced Search link, next to the search button, there is a list of fields for more specific search criteria. This way, instead of doing a general search, it can be specified that the search criteria belongs to a particular document field: Title, Author, Subject, etc.
At the top of the result list the Criteria List is displayed, which shows the current query being performed. This also allows to remove a filter.
The default sorting is based on the relevance of the search result, which is calculated based on the matching field, the ocurrences frequency, the proximity between the search terms into an specific field, etc. Even though the relevance sorting is appropiate in most cases, it can be changed to use other kinds of sorting: title, date, etc.
Another functionality is the ability to select the resources that will be used at the search time. When selecting the RESOURCES option, a window with all the configured resources is displayed, grouped by different categories.
